It is with the profoundest regret that we inform you of the death of Phaswane Mpe, author, intellectual and academic.

Phaswane died on Sunday, December 12, at the age of 34. Born on September 10 1970, in Polokwane, Phaswane matriculated from St Bede's High in 1988. He went on to complete a BA, Honours and MA in African Literature at Wits. He also obtained a diploma in publishing studies from Oxford Brookes University in Britain. He lectured in African Literature at Wits for several years and was studying for a doctorate at WISER.

Phaswane was well-known as a novelist and creative writer. His novel, Welcome To Our Hillbrow, was published in 2001 to general acclaim and was one of five finalists in both the SANLAM Fiction Award in 2001 and the Sunday Times Literary Award in 2002.

For colleagues who are still in Johannesburg there will be a memorial service at Wits at WISER (Richard Ward Building, 6th floor) on Wednesday December 15 at 13h00. When students and colleagues return in January, there will be another memorial service. We are awaiting funeral announcements.

*Isobel Hofmeyr is a professor of African Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand and a former colleague of Phaswane Mpe.
