New from Penguin

"A small masterpiece . . . A serious and convincing work that demands to be read." Guardian

The Facts behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, a collection of stories by Booker Prize winner Yann Martel, was originally published in 1993. The book was hailed on both sides of the Atlantic for its power and elegance. Dealing with such themes as science and sex, storytelling and illness, war and music, death and bureaucracy, the tales are moving and thought-provoking. They are as inventive in form as they are timeless in content, and display that startling mix of dazzle and depth that have made Yann Martel an international phenomenon.
This new edition of The Facts behind the Helsinki Roccamatios features three of the stories from the original edition, including the remarkable novella from which the collection takes its name, and which won the prestigious Journey Prize. The book looks set to further Martel's reputation as one of the most interesting writers in the world today.

About the author
Yann Martel was born in Spain, but currently lives in Montreal. He is the hugely acclaimed author of Self (his first novel). His third novel, the sensational Life of Pi, won the 2002 Man Booker Prize for Fiction and was short-listed for the Governor-General Awards and the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 2002. The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, which Canongate is delighted to be reprinting, was Martell's second book.

The Zulu war of 1879 was the most controversial and brutal British imperial conflict of the nineteenth century. Yet as Saul David reveals, this war, which needlessly cost thousands of lives, has an even darker side.
As a pre-emptive strike launched against the Zulu kingdom of King Cetshwayo - who had no quarrel with the British Empire - the war was supposed to turn a host of disparate colonies into a South African confederation. But from the start it did not go according to plan …
Using new material from British and South African archives, David exposes the underbelly of this sordid imperial war, with several startling conclusions: that the orders for confederation came from London and only the timing of the war can be blamed on the ambitious proconsul; that the victory at Rorke's Drift was blown out of all proportion to reduce the impact of the far more significant defeat at Isandlwana, and the record number of Victoria Crosses awarded was part of that process; that British troops committed atrocities - including the murder and destruction of villages - just as bad as Zulu practices; and that the British commanders put reputation before the lives of their men by ignoring King Cetshwayo's attempts to sue for peace.
Saul David's Zulu is a brilliant work of history that is charged by breathtaking writing and controversial new research. It also has important resonances for the modern world.

About the author
Saul David is an author and broadcaster. He was born in 1966 and studied history at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, receiving his doctorate in 2001. He is the author of six previous books and has presented a number of television documentaries.

"This panoramic social novel with a needle-sharp point of view sends up both small-town America and politics. There's mordant social commentary, discussion of Jeffersonian civic ideals and bittersweet romance, plus more than you needed to know about cow midwifery." People

When Manda Frank gives birth to an astonishing eleven babies, the world descends on her hometown of Three Chimneys, Virginia. Beneath the intense media spotlight the town begins to give up its long-held secrets: from the unrequited love of August Vaughn, the town's avid Thomas Jefferson impersonator, to the more dangerous and subversive passions of Mr March, the local history teacher.
Meanwhile, cheese-maker Margaret Prickett decides to highlight the plight of the rural community by creating "The Mammoth Cheese" - a 1 235-pound wheel of Cheshire which she plans to parade all the way to Washington - while failing to notice the plight of her own teenage daughter Polly, who is caught up in the dangerous romance of rebellion and is veering precariously towards tragedy ...

"Dibdin is a highly sophisticated writer who has chosen to stay largely within the crime genre. He brings off its required effects superbly, being especially a master of understated menace and unforeseen plunges into horror."Sunday Times

A group of Austrian cavers exploring a network of abandoned military tunnels in the Italian Alps comes across human remains at the bottom of a deep shaft. Everyone assumes the death was accidental … until the still unidentified body is stolen from the morgue and the Defence Ministry puts a news blackout on the case.
The case begins to have the whiff of political intrigue, and that's enough to interest Aurelio Zen's boss at the Interior Ministry, who wants to know who is hiding what from whom, and why.
The search for the truth leads Zen back into the murky history of post-war Italy to uncover the truth about a crime that everyone thought was as dead and buried as the victim.

Praise for Michael Dibdin
