Penguin presents the funniest book…
by the most charming author…
that you'll encounter
this year!

It's South Africa, 1990. The country still squirms under the iron fist of Apartheid.
Two major events are about to happen: the release of Nelson Mandela, and, more importantly, Spud Milton's first year at an elite, boys-only private boarding school. Cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe, a senile granny, and a dormitory full of strange characters, Spud has to forge a new life for himself in this foreign and sometime hostile environment.

About the author:

John van de Ruit was born in Durban, South Africa on 20th April 1975. He was educated at Michaelhouse and the University of Natal where he completed a Masters degree in Drama and Performance. Since 1998 he has been a professional actor, playwright and producer. His own plays include War Cry and Crooked although he is best known for his collaboration with Ben Voss on the hit satirical sketch show, Green Mamba, which has toured extensively throughout Southern Africa since 2002. He received an FNB VITA award for Best Original South African Script. (2000).

The second in The Sunday Philosophy Club series, starring amateur sleuth Isabel Dalhousie.

Isabel Dalhousie thinks often of friends, sometimes of lovers, and on occasion of chocolate. As an Edinburgh philosoper she is certain of where she stands. She can review a book called In Praise of Sin with panache and conviction, but real life is... well, perhaps a bit more challenging - particularly when it comes to her feelings for Jamie, a younger man who should have married her niece, Cat. Jamie's handsomeness leaves Isabel feeling distinctly uneasy, and ethically disturbed. "I am a philosopher", she thinks, "but I am also a woman". And more disturbance is in store.

About the author:

Alexander McCall Smith has a double existence. He is a Professor of Medical Law, but also an author who has now written over fifty books on a wide range of subjects. His collection of African stories, Children Of Wax, received critical acclaim and has been the subject of an award-winning film.

Driftwood is the story of Moses Swart who, as a child at the turn of the 20th century, is washed ashore like a piece of driftwood at Rietfontein in the Southern Cape. Plucked from amongst the drowned bodies and the wreckage of a ship which floundered in a storm, Moses is taken in by the local community.
It is 50 years later and with no knowledge of his past, Moses spends his days feeling displaced and in search of his real identity. His work in the garden for the elderly Lord and Lady de Samourez begins to yield answers to the questions that plague Moses, and in turn, he begins to discover the missing pieces of his life.

About the author:

Dalene Matthee, in this her final work, has created a moving tale of identity lost and found. .

At the invitation of the Conan Doyle Estate, the best-selling historical thriller writer, Caleb Carr, has created a new adventure for Holmes and Watson, set in the grandeur of Holyrood Palace in the twilight of Queen Victoria's reign.
Mycroft Holmes, charged with ensuring the personal safety of Queen Victoria, calls on his brother for help when a number of attempts have been made on her life and when two unexplained deaths occur amongst the staff at her Scottish residencies. Accompanied by Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmes goes north by train, examining the few facts Mycroft has been able to cryptically supply. To Watson's bafflement he is sure there is a link between these deaths and the murder in the old royal apartments at Holyrood of the secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots: a killing which left a bloodstain that daily refreshes itself and in a room where voices can be heard in the darkest hours of the night.
Can Holmes's extraordinary deductive powers solve the historical crime as well as the contemporary one?

About the author:

Caleb Carr is a renowned and respected military historian, author of Lessons of Terror. He regularly contributes to The Baker Street Irregulars.
