The Live Poets' Society

Brett Beiles

The Live Poets' Society (aka LiPS) was founded in 1995 and now boasts a membership of some 500 poetry lovers. An average of about 50 attend each meeting. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month (excluding December) at 6 pm in the Quarterdeck of The Point Yacht Club in Durban. In order to make the group totally accessible, there is no subscription or entry fee. However, there is a donation box for those who wish to contribute to expenses. Funds are also raised by raffles of poetry publications. These are often donated or offered at cost by guest poets whose collections have been published. As this is LiPS's 10th anniversary year, the group hopes to raise sufficient to publish a quality anthology of its work over the years.

Meetings usually start with a guest poet or authority on the subject. Occasionally we play tapes/CDs or videos/DVDs by, or about, well-known poets. Over the years our guest poets/speakers have included, in no particular order: Dorian Haarhoff, Alan Kolski Horwitz, Ike Mboneni Muila, Mphutlane wa Bofelo, Peter Strauss, Kobus Moolman, Michelle McGrane, Marí Peté, Nise Malange, Evelyn Cresswell, Michael Cawood Green, Rose Mokhosi, Prof Margaret Lenta, Prof Michael Chapman - and many more. Guest presenters often launch their latest publication at LiPS meetings.

After a short refreshment/comfort break the meeting resumes with a predetermined theme. This may be connected to the guest presenter's work or an event or commemorative day around that date. Members are encouraged to present their poems, which could be linked to the topic.

Finally, in the "Poet Pourri" session, members air their work on any subject they wish.
